I grew up on a mixed farm in South Gippsland. From an early age, and felt that many ‘unpopular’ breeds should be retained because of forgotten virtues. They had been popular once because they could do something better than other breeds. The interest in rare breeds was really ignited when a neighbour got some Cheviot rams. This was during the hay-day for the breed but I had never seen such sheep. I later established a Cheviot Sheep stud, became a judge and judged at most major and many minor shows.

I have been involved with the Rare Breeds organization since very early in its inception here. During that time there have been many changes. Two previous organizations were combined to form the new Rare Breeds Trust of Australia. I held the position of Treasurer for some years. When Paddocks and Perches was without an editor I offered to take on that which I did for 10 years. Then the Managing Director resigned so I also took on that position. This has been a real challenge, and in that time I have worked hard to make this organization a very modern one.

If we are to be taken seriously we have to be seen to be efficient and modern.

Now retired I live in northwest Victoria and have some Faverolles hens.

I devote much of my time to the Rare Breeds Trust, trying to make it a bigger and better organization that encourages the preservation of rare breeds.

"Once they are gone, they are gone forever."
